Working with students

I view mentoring as a way to bring new students into science and give underrepresented students a voice where it has too long been absent. I am always seeking to improve as a mentor and I learn as much from my students as they do from me.

My approach is to partner with students to navigate our quickly changing knowledge landscape and ensure they meet self-driven goals.


As a PI, I take three steps as a mentor:

  • In both my classroom and in my research lab, I provide a clear path to success. I utilize backward course design to identify learning goals, then clearly communicate those goals to students in lectures, for the semester, and for the exams. In the lab, we collaboratively establish a career development plan to ensure their work is helping them achieve their dreams.

  • A science education can provide skills for success in many careers. Students in my lab and classroom learn to think critically, communicate their work, integrate ideas across multiple levels of organization and analysis, and compassionately approach the world. I design activities to integrate skills – such as combining data collection and analysis with science communication and critical thinking skills.

  • I continuously assess both student learning and my effectiveness as an instructor, working to ensure my students and I are collectively accomplishing our learning goals. I design assessments to evaluate learning and to improve my own teaching and mentoring when I see my students struggle. I ask for mid-semester evaluations for my teaching and listen when I need to improve. I learn as much from my students as they learn from me.
